Kindergarten - 5th Grade
Strong Foundations.
Growing Independence. Thoughtful Challenge.
The elementary years are a time of meaningful academic growth and increasing independence. At The Academy, students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 build strong foundations in reading, writing, and math while developing the critical thinking skills, confidence, and responsibility they need to thrive. Learning is intentional, expectations are clear, and every student is supported as they grow academically and personally.
Learning That Emphasizes Thinking
Elementary classrooms are designed to help students think deeply, ask questions, and explain their reasoning. Lessons move beyond memorization, encouraging students to make connections, solve problems, and engage actively in their learning. This approach helps students develop strong academic habits and a genuine love of learning.
Teachers emphasize:
- Explaining thinking and strategies
- Asking meaningful questions
- Applying skills across subjects
- Building confidence through understanding
Instruction That Meets Students Where They Are
Students learn at different paces and in different ways, and our classrooms reflect that reality. Elementary classrooms include a wide range of learners, from those who benefit from additional support to those ready for greater challenge.
Teachers use differentiated instruction, particularly in reading and math, to ensure each child is appropriately challenged and supported. Small-group instruction, targeted practice, and ongoing assessment allow teachers to respond to individual needs while maintaining high expectations for all students.
Strong Foundations Across the Curriculum
The elementary curriculum is thoughtfully selected to build skills, understanding, and confidence over time.
Literacy
Students develop strong reading and writing skills through explicit instruction, small-group support, and opportunities to read, write, and discuss across subjects.
Mathematics

Math instruction emphasizes conceptual understanding and problem-solving, helping students explain their thinking and persevere through challenges.

Hands-on, inquiry-based learning encourages curiosity and critical thinking as even our youngest students explore the world around them.
Academic & Social-Emotional Support
For a school of our size, our student support team is a significant strength. Elementary students benefit from a collaborative approach that supports academic growth, executive functioning, and social-emotional development. This proactive approach helps students build skills, resilience, and confidence, without labels or unnecessary pressure.
Support includes:
- Reading support and intervention as needed
- Learning specialists who work closely with teachers
- A full-time social worker who leads classroom-based social-emotional learning and provides additional support when needed
A Well-Rounded Academic Experience
Elementary students participate in Spanish, Art, Music, and Physical Education, supporting creativity, movement, and global awareness alongside core academics.
These experiences reinforce collaboration, discipline, and joy in learning while helping students discover new interests and strengths.
Preparing Students for What Comes Next
By the end of Grade 5, students are confident learners who understand expectations, manage their work with increasing independence, and are well-prepared for the academic rigor and responsibility of Middle School. They are ready to take on new challenges with confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of purpose.
