Building Mathematical Thinkers

At The Academy at St. Joan of Arc, math is taught as a way of thinking, not just a set of steps to follow. Students build a deep understanding of mathematical principles that stay with them as they grow.

Early Math Foundations

In Early Childhood, students begin by exploring core concepts such as sorting, grouping, counting, and comparing. Learning is hands-on and developmentally appropriate, helping students make sense of numbers and patterns in their everyday world.

Problem-Solving from the Start

Beginning in Kindergarten, students solve word problems grounded in real life experiences.  Students first work independently, then collaborate in small groups, and finally share their thinking with the class. Multiple solution paths are offered, valued and celebrated.

Growing Confidence and Collaboration

This approach continues through Grade 8, strengthening individual skills while building confidence, communication, and collaboration. Students learn to explain their reasoning, listen to others, and approach challenges with curiosity. Just as important, they learn in an environment where ideas are shared freely and supported by peers and teachers.
